The Replacement: An In-Development Feature

Written, Produced & Directed by Jess

(Genre: Drama / Adventure /Coming-of-Age)

Sage, a gifted graduate student and part-time musician, turns down a sought-after corporate internship to take a summer music role in a remote African region. Having grown up sensing that her family's true history was kept from her, she arrives at a crossroads, deeply questioning the world around her. What begins as an intimate search for meaning gradually draws her into a reality far removed from the structures she once trusted. As Sage forms connection with the local remote community and becomes increasingly entangled with a liaison, her journey spirals into a life-altering crisis, one that forces her to confront a possibility: that she may have unknowingly played a role in something irreversible.

The film explores identity, displacement, psychological healing, and the fragile tension between inner human truth and systemic power.

Proof of Concept Scenes

Scene 01 - A Secret Unearthed

In the summer role, Sage stumbled upon a note not intended for her eyes and overheard a conversation she was never supposed to hear. As she listened to the voices beneath her feet, she realized the world she had stepped into was far larger than the music and goodwill she thought she was part of. Beneath it all were decisions and influences, nothing obvious, but enough to leave her with the sense that there was more she wasn’t seeing. She had come looking for adventure, hoping for an authentic experience. The irony was hard to ignore: she recently vowed to never be swallowed by the machinery of the systems around her, yet somehow she had walked straight into something even larger.

Scene 02 - Awakening

After sensing the deeper truth behind her role, Sage attempts to leave, but something unexpected changes her course.

Scene 03 - As If Never Here

In the aftermath of the fall, Sage wants only to return to where she came from. She has never truly felt at home there, and yet her attempt to break away has left her unsettled in a way she didn’t expect. What she experienced did not just fracture her sense of direction, but her sense of people — intentions, truths, and what can be trusted at all. What began as a search for something authentic now feels like a costly detour. And yet, something in her had been stirred awake, not by what had gone wrong, but by the moment something in her refused to stay, unfamiliar even to herself, as if it had been waiting long before she knew how to recognize it.

Scene 04 - The First Cut

After everything she’s been through, Sage is still trying to make sense of what happened. What begins to shift, however, is not confined to what has just happened, but to something she has been carrying far longer. For the first time, something deeper begins to reveal itself, something that had been there long before any of this, shaping more than she realized. She grew up in a life shaped by decisions she never made, placed into something stable, but never entirely her own. Now, in a place where nothing follows the rules back home, she’s left without a way to hold it together. Yet something about this community feels different; it is unplanned and so alive. They ask nothing from her, offer no clear answers, and yet seem to see her more clearly than she’s ever been seen. She’s asked to act: to cut the bindings that hold a long scroll in place, and begin letting go of the way she believed things had to unfold. As the healer and her community offers a path beyond physical recovery, Sage finds herself in an experience that begins to connect her pain, her past, and a truth far greater than she expected.

Scene 05 - The Prompt

In the aftermath of the fall, Sage wants only to return to where she came from. She has never truly felt at home there, and yet her attempt to break away has left her unsettled in a way she didn’t expect. What she experienced did not just fracture her sense of direction, but her sense of people — intentions, truths, and what can be trusted at all. What began as a search for something authentic now feels like a costly detour. And yet, something in her had been stirred awake, not by what had gone wrong, but by the moment something in her refused to stay, unfamiliar even to herself, as if it had been waiting long before she knew how to recognize it.

Scene 06 - Before Departure

The night before leaving the region, Sage is unexpectedly told that her return will be arranged for the following day, earlier than planned. As she tries to make sense of the change, a part of her feels her connection to the community is not yet complete. Beneath the surface of a logistics conversation, subtle inconsistencies begin to emerge, suggesting that her presence may have changed something while she was there.

Scene 07 - Between Places

On her final night in the remote region, Sage speaks to the community how she had let go of the internalized logic and inherited narrative she once held tightly. Now, as she begins the long journey home, she is in between two places, over the grasslands, no longer running, but returning. Even as she heads back to her old world, everything is different; she has found the clarity to walk it as herself.

Scene 08 - Cake

After returning through a quiet airport transit, Sage is guided through a series of smooth, pre-arranged exchanges. After a brief stop at a music store, a purchase reveals something unexpected about something she’s been given.

Scene 09 - The Presentation

After returning to Canada, Sage navigates a world shaped by expectation and quiet tension. An unexpected call reveals that even the “wrong” people can see what others miss—pushing her to rethink the rules and shape an unconventional idea she ultimately presents.

Scene 10 - The News

What begins as a triumphant afternoon after Sage’s presentation slowly becomes the moment her understanding of reality begins to transform.

Scene 11- Five Percent

For much of her life, Sage carried the quiet sense that some part of her family’s history remained emotionally unfinished inside Stewart, from observing the unusual gravity certain memories carried around him. When she unexpectedly discovers a concealed project archive in his office, those subtle impressions begin connecting into a truth that reshapes some understanding.

Scene 11- Meeting with Healer

As questioning unfolds, the healer senses Sage’s connection to the village may be more personal than intentional.

Scene 12- The Letter

Sage decides to take a leap of faith, and putting forward a proposal to someone she believes could change the direction of what follows. It isn’t a request for answers, but rather an attempt to step into what she now understands, even if she doesn’t yet know where it will lead.
